How many margs (paths) are there in Hindu dharma to Godhead?

Mainly three paths are there :

  1. Gnan (knowledge),
  2. Karma (Rituals) marg means to find out that is missing.
  3. Bhakti (devotion) marg

To make our intellect pious and by that pious intellect to know our soul and God in gnan marg. It is very difficult. It needs much penance, meditation and yoga. Yagna offering. Vratas, Recitation and Pooja (worship) are rituals. They are also not so easy. To love God heartly, to please him by loving is Bhakti (Devotion). It is very easy and natural.

Is Bhakti Marg one or many?

Bhakti is 84 types, not one; but mainly two types.

  1. Maryada,
  2. Pushti.

A person offers his Bhakti, to the demigod or demi Goddess as prescripture is Maryada Bhakti.
A person offers his selfless divine love to Lord Krishna by doing his Seva, is Pushti Bhakti.

Are there sects in Bhakti Marg?

Yes, there are main six sects. They all are called Vaishnav Sampraday.

  1. Shree Vaishnav Sampraday of Shri Ramamunjacharya.
  2. Veer Vaishnav Sampraday of Shri Mashavacharya.
  3. Nimbarka Sampraday of Shri Nimbarkacharya.
  4. Pushti Sampraday of Shri Vallabacharaya.
  5. Goudiya Sampraday of Shri Krishna Chaitanya.
  6. Swaminarayan Sampraday of Shri Sahajanand Swami.

Over and above these six, Ramanandi Sampraday worships Shri Ram. Other sects worship Shiv, Ganpati, Demi Goddess, Surya etc. They are Shaiv Sampraday, Ganpatya Sampraday, and Shakta Sampraday. PUSHTI SAMPRADAY. (sect)

My mother says that our dharma is Hindu, but our sect (sampraday) is Pushti sect. Since you have already explained 'dharma' and Hindu Dharma, please elaborate on 'Sampraday'. What does it mean?

'Sampraday' is a Sanskrit word. It literary means, that which is given well and properly. When God (Bhagvan) comes himself in the form of a great soul on Earth, and he as Bhagvan gives a special Mantra for us, that is called 'Sampraday'.

God appeared in the form of Shri Mahaprabhuji, 519 years ago. Then on Shravan sud Ekadashi (agiyarash), God appeared before Shri Mahaprabhuji. It was mid night. He gave Shri Mahaprabhuji the 'Brahma Sambandh' mantra. The Pushti Sampraday has started since then.

What does the word 'Pushti' mean?

In the Sanskrit language, the words 'pshan, 'pushti' are derivatives from 'push' dhat. The body is maintained by an in take of nourishing food. A person with a strong healthy body is said to be 'pusht'. This can be explained further. When we are small, we are completely taken care of by our mothers. We are quite helpless in managing matters like healthy diet, etc. But Mother loves us, so she takes special tender loving care. This support and help which is provided without any asking is called 'krupa', mercy or compassion.

Now this same word 'krupa', in Sanskrit has many meanings. It can mean grace, nourishment, support. This is exactly why our path is know as the Pushti sampraday, because God himself graces us, supports us just the way a child stumbles while learning to walk and his parents help him to stand up and walk; we are unable to do anything to attain God, but God being merciful, bestows his grace on us. He takes care of everything and us and he comes to us. Pushtimarg means the path of grace or support.

The path on which, God comes to us, looking for us and bestows His mercy, is called Pushtimarg of Pushti Sampraday.
