RELATED TO FOOD |

There are countless rules necessary for keeping good health by which physical
vitality is maintained. In the same way, there are innumerable rules related
to food for keeping purity of the soul. Purity of the soul is necessary
for seva, devotion, remembrance and other such activities.
Vaishnavs should abstain from eating all such things
which have been forbidden in the scriputres, Viz.. Meat, eggs, food
prepared with eggs, alchohol and other intoxicating substances, onion
and garlic. These are strictly prohibited all the times. To whatever extent possible, vaishnavs should try
to abstain from eating in restaurants. Impure food eaten in restaurants
destroys the entire intellect, especially the decision making faculty
which judges right and wrong and good health required for seva can
not be maintained. To whatever extent possible, vaishnavs should not
take food or water in the homes of non vaishnavs as it destroys devotional
bhava. Those foods which may be considered to promote good
health but which are harmful to the soul should be avoided. Likewise
those things beneficial for the soul but which may be harmful to the
health should be avoided. (For example, sweets offered to Thakurji
should not be taken by a diabetic). 5 |
