Why is it called ASHTAKSHARMANTRA?

There are eight words contained in it, that is why it is called 'Ashtakshar mantra'. In our Pushti-Marg it is also called 'nam-mantra', because it embodies God's name.

How is this mantra supposed to be spoken?

There are three ways of reciting this mantra.

  1. Loudly, so that others can hear.
  2. With just lip movement, so that it is not audible to other,
  3. Mentally without any lip movement. The third one is the best one. The mantra should be mused mentally.

Where can one recite this mantra?

Others mantras are chanted after a bath, and after wearing clean clothes by sitting on an asan. The Ashtakshar mantra can be chanted similarly. There is no rigid ritual to recite it. You can muse it while undertaking any of these activities, walking, strolling, eating-drinking, playing, sleeping, waking. You can recite it constantly.

Is there any other mantra, besides this one, which can be recited?

If our gurus gives us a mantra, that can be recited. There are many mantras. But you cannot recite them all. Pushtimarg has advocated

  1. Ashtakshar
  2. Brahmasambandh mantra.

These two mantras have been given to us by our Gurudev, so we must recite them. Every morning, after by bath, you must (recite) do one jap mala, at least once of this mantra.

How many times would be doing this mantra if we complete one round?

There are 108 beads in one mala (rosary; not necklace). Hence if you complete one round of the mala you will have done the jap of the mantra 108 times. In case you do not have access to a japmala, you can count on your fingers and complete one round.

Is there any specific method of using this jupmala?

Yes. The knot in the mala is called 'meru'. The jup starts with bead after that meru. The bead is to be held between the thumb and the middle finger. The forefinger (the one between the thumb and middle finger) should not touch the bead. The bead should be facing your chest. When one round is complete, the meru should not be crossed over. Turn the mala around, and restart the next round.
