RANA VYASA

After this incident, Rana Vyasa's false pride about his control over his senses became removed. As long as devotees are plagued by pride, ego and other impurities, Bhagwan will not allow them the sublime experience of His realization. Bhagwan will punish ego originated devotees like Rana Vyasa in order to extinguish their pride.

If a devotee should ever do something of a low nature, we should not look down upon his actions, and view it as all Bhagwan's lilas. Another thing we learn from Jagannath Joshi's behaviour is that devotees should have mercy over all living beings and should even help thieves and other undesirable persons if they need help. This is the Way of the true Vaishnava.

Later, Rana Vyasa moved to Siddhapura. One day Rana Vyasa and Jagannath Joshi went to the Saraswati River and after bathing and performing their prayers, they noticed one Raja Putani accom¬panied by her relatives, about to commit sati. Jagannath Joshi then asked Rana Vyasa what happens to those who commit sati. Rana Vyasa shaking his head replied, "She is uselessly burning her body with a ghost.

That very same body can be used in Thakurji’s worship and is a vehicle to liberation."

At that moment the Raja Putani saw Rana Vyasa shaking his head and suddenly decided to not commit sati. When she informed the people she was with that she was not going to ascended her husband's funeral fire, all the people told her, "No one will let you return home. We will burn you here." The Raja Putani then replid, ~'If you forcibly burn me, you will all be guilty of murder. I do not want to go home. I will remain by the banks of this river." After everyone returned home, the Raja Putani started to dwell in a small hut by the banks of the Saraswati River.

The following day when Rana Vyasa and Jagannath Joshi returned to the river for their bath and prayers, the Raja Putani asked Rana Vyasa, "What were you saying yesterday when you were looking at me and shaking your head ?" Rana Vyas replied that they always talked with each other like that. The RajaPutani then questioned, "Why are you hiding what you say of me? When I saw you shaking your head like that yesterday, I decided not to commit sati. You have saved me from burning' myself. Now tell me what you had really said, and also enlighten me as to my true duty."

In this fashion, the Raja Putani obstinatly requested Rana Vyasa to reveal what he had said. Rana Vyasa finally replied, 1 was saying that human birth is the best of all births and to waste one's life by burning oneself with a ghost is certainaly a shame for the same can be used to successfully perform Bhagwan Shri Krishna’s seva (worship)."

The Raja Putani prayed, "I have taken refuge in you. How should 1 remember and worship Shri Krishna whereby my after-life will also become fruitful." Rana Vyasa explained, "Now you are in sutaka. When your sutaka is over, 1 will instruct you." She returned to her hut and anxiously awaited the day when Rana Vyasa would give her devotional teachings.
