Importance of Kamdhenu (cows) in Vedas

Kamdhenu (cows) in Vedas are highly considered holiest Jive (soul) on this earth since creation. The cow is the mother of all and Brahma considers cows worship is absolute and mandatory.

In Rig-ved
“Apaavrat vrajino rut-shavargha-dhiduroo manunidhav:avaah”
|
Means: Vraj-vasundra (earth) is better than Swarg-lok (heaven) because it is full of Gaudhan (wealth of Cows) and is better than Swarg-lok (heaven) and its (Vraj) people’s knowledge is as same as Dev loog.

Bhagwan Shri Krishna have immense love for Vraj bhumi and Vraj-jano because Vraj-jano (every living and nonliving beings) have mugdhbhaov (innocence behaviour) and their ears stand erect like cows to listen Vanu-nadh (the musical sound of flute).
Cows are part of Vraj-jano and their standing ears are erect to hear call from Shri Krishna’s, flute. Shri Krishna’s immense love for cows has made cows as Vraj-bhakths. Cows being ni-sadan (without instrument) Bhakths, Bhagwan Shri Krishna is always ready to help and assist cows.

Therefore, He is known as Guala/Gopala. Similarly, if Bhakths (human beings) becomes ni-sadan and serve Purna Purshotam Bhagwan Shri Krishna, He (Shri Krishna) is always ready to help and assist them.
Gaudhan were very important to the people of Rigved period and several hymns refer to ten thousand and more cattle. Other verses also mention that the Sarasvati region poured milk and ghee, indicating that cows were herded in this region.
In the Rig Ved, the cow figure frequently as symbols of wealth, and is in comparison with river.
In Ved Indra Dev is often compared to a bull.

In Yajur ved
“Thavaam vaasthunewesmasi gamdya yatra gavoo burishrangah aayas:
Atraah tadhuru ghayasaya vrashna: param padmvabhathi buri.”

Means: Indra while praying to Gauloognath Bhagwan Shri Krishna and Shri Seshji, said
“Hai Prabhu, wherever beautiful shingdhawali (horn) numerous cows are gazing and learned peoples are singing their fame, Vrashni-vansi Shri Krishna is in the middle of them, we Devs are going there”

In Harivamsh Puran
|
The Harivamsh Puran depicts Shri Krishna as a Guala (cowherd). He is often called as Bala Gopala, (the child who protects the cows). Another name of Shri Krishna is, Govinda, means one who brings satisfaction to the cows. Other scriptures identify the cow as the "mother" of all civilization, its milk nurturing the population. The highest kind of gift is gifting a cow.

The Prithvi Mata (mother earth) was, in the form of a cow, successively milked of various beneficent substances for the benefit of humans, by various deities and Prithu raja chasing Prithvi, who is in the form of a cow and milked the cow to generate crops for humans.
