That afternoon he sat by the banks of the Ganga at Hanuman Ghat, awaiting nightfall. At that time, Shri Mahaprabhuji happened to arrive there. One Vaishnava on that occasion asked Shri Mahaprabhuji, "What is the fruit of drowning oneself in the Ganga?" Shri Mahaprabhuji explained,
"If someone drowns himself simply out of foolish pride, he will receive no fruit, rather such a soul will be reborn as a snake. Others who commit the murder of their own soul will be born as evil or diseased persons. If a renunciate humbly drowns himself in the Ganga while remem¬bering the immortal Bhagwan, he will receive some frui t. If he does not remember Bhagwan, he will certainly fall."
Rana Vyasa overhearing their conversation thought Shri Mahaprabhuji to be some great soul. He then approached Shri Mahaprabhuji and said, "It is my great fortune that this Vaishnava has questioned You about committing suicide in the Ganga. I have been sitting here fasting all day, awaiting the choice opportunity when I would be able to drown myself in these sacred waters. Now please accept me and enlighten me about the liberated state of being."
Shri Mahaprabhuji replied, "You say that you want to take ini¬tiation, but when you consider yourself a master, why do you want to become my disciple ?" Rana Vyasa replied. "Before I was very proud. When I was defeated by all the Banares pandits, I decided to drown myself. Now I see my fault and am helpless like an orphan and desire only Your grace."
Shri Mahaprabhuji told him to bathe in the Ganga and then gave him the formal initiation into the Path of Grace. Afterwards, Shri Mahaprabhuji advised him to victoriously debate again with the pandits that defeated him on the previous day. The following morning he returned to Shri Mahaprabhuji and bowed to Him, Shri Mahaprabhuji taught him one small doctrine called 'Chatsuh/okli and explained.
"Always and with all sentiments one should worship Shri Krishna. This is one's true dharma and there exist no other at any other time or place. This is one eternal dharma and Shri Krishna, Who is all powerful with Himself accomplish everything. For this reason His devotees should remain unconcerned. If Gokulladish, Shri Krishna establishes Himself in all ways within the heart, then of what concerns are any worldly or religious fruits? Therefore, Shri Krishna's lotus feet should always and in every way be remembered and served. It is my opinion that this Way should never be renounced."
After hearing Shri Mahaprabhuji he proceded back to the same pandits and successfully debated them with just a single argument. That afternoon he returned to Shri Mahaprabhuji who immediately said, "You have defeated all the pandits but you should not become proud for egoism ruins everything." Rana Vyasa admitted, "I will never become proud. I have previously suffered greatly bacause of it. Now, please shower that grace which will enable me to receive the Shri Krishna's mercy."
