Damodardas Harsani (Damala)

That great saint, deciding to stay in the village resided in one small hut outside the town by the side of a lake. He would daily come to see Damodardas and then would return to his hut, where he engaged himself in the Bhagwan’s holy worship.

After some days, Shri Mahaprabhuji came to Damodardas’s town. Damodardas, seeing Shri Mahaprabhuji became so filled with ecstasy that he jumped right down from the balcony and grasped Shri Mahaprabhuji’s feet. At that moment he received a new divine body that was filled with divine love for Shri Krishna. Damodardas, after having the mere sight of Shri Mahaprabhuji became firmly established in the constant bliss of Shri Krishna’s nectar. Later, Shri Mahaprabhuji went to the lake where that devotee was staying. The devotee seeing Shri Mahaprabhuji excited rushed and prostrated at Shri Mahaprabhuji’s feet and there giving up his material body, he achieved the eternal divine shelter of Shri Mahaprabhuji’s lotus feet.

Shri Mahaprabhuji called Damodardas by the name of Damala, which literally means ‘pure’. Here the question arises that when even ordinary Vaishnavas are pure by nature then why did Shri Mahaprabhuji call him Damala? Here ‘pure’ implies the devotional sentiment for Bhagwan Shri Krishna, and when one’s devotion for Shri Mahaprabhuji excels even that of Shri Krishna, then one has attained the supreme purity. For this reason Damodardas was called Damala, as his devotion to Shri Mahaprabhuji even excelled his devotion to Bhagwan as we will see later in this story.

Once while Shri Mahaprabhuji was resting by the banks of the Yamuna River at Gokul on the Takourani Ghat under a Chhokar tree. He became concerned as to how he would be able to fulfil the Thakurji’s order to re-establish the relation of people of this impure Kali Age with the divine Shri Krishna. While engaged in such deep thoughts Shri Krishna suddenly appeared in front of Him and said, “Why do you worry so?” Shri Mahaprabhuji then replied, “The nature of these souls is so sinful that I am concerned as to how their reunion with you can ever take place.” Shri Krishna then consoled Shri Mahaprabhuji saying, “Those who take initiation from you will be relieved of all sins and I will personally accept them. Go out and take divine souls under your shelter.”

The reason why Shri Mahaprabhuji was worried about how the souls sinful by nature would be able to be reunited with Thakurji was that he was mainly concerned how Bhagwan Shri Krishna could accept anything of inferior quality, Shri Krishna only enjoys and accepts things of the highest quality.

Another thing revealed here is that if Shri Mahaprabhuji started to give people initiation saying that it was his own formula, then only a very few people would have faith in it, but because of Purnaprusotam Himself had given Shri Mahaprabhuji the order to uplift people through the formula of Bramha Sambandha people would have firm faith in it for Shri Krishna Himself had given Shri Mahaprabhuji the command and promised that He would look after their liberations. A rough English translation of the Bramha Sambandha from the eighty four syllable Sanskrit mantra goes as following.

“Thousands of years have elapsed since my soul’s separation from Bhagwan. I am suffering intense pain and anguish in hopes of meeting Him. In this condition of separation I am joyless, therefore I take a vow of consecration and dedicate my body, organs, vital breath, mind, and their functions, also my wife, children, house, relatives, wealth and the merits of this world and the next, along with my soul to Bhagwan Shri Krishna. I am Your servant, Oh Krishna I am Yours!.”

On the following morning Shri Mahaprabhuji composed a small doctrine for his disciples called Siddhantrahasya, which explains the orders, Shri Krishna had given to him on the previous night. Its translation is given below.
