Bhagwan Shri Krishna
In Shri-Madh-Bhagwat-Gitaji, said:

Yagiya-Dhan-Taaph Karm Na Thiyajayam Kariyamaev Tatha
|
|
Meaning, Yagiya (Vedic Ritual where, in fire, we immerse Til (sesame), Cows Ghee (clarified butter) and other ingredients depending upon the Yagiya and chant appropriate Vedic mantra and or hymns); Dhaan (Is to give to the poor or needy and ofcourse to Brahman); Taaph (Meditation in literal sense sitting in one place in a Padhmasan Posture with dhyan mudra, chanting the vedic mantra with closed eyes) are the main Karm of human beings, which under any circumstance should not be ignored. It is a personal duty of every human being that has to be fulfilled.
Vrat is a form of Taaph. In Shastras, Taaph has the same importance as keeping a Vrat (fast), as the original form of Taaph that was done in the past, is no longer possible for all to perform, in the Kaliyug.

Vrat is important in human life
|
Just like, in Rivers Ganga; in Light (Prakash Tatva) Sun; in Devtas - Bhagwan Vishnu are the Prime most leaders, similarly amongst all Vratas it is Ekadashi Vrat that has highest significance.
When so much importance is given to Ekadashi Vrat, one must understand, why Ekadashi Vrat is leading and why one has to follow it.
What is Ekadashi?
Ekadashi is in form of a Devi. She appeared in the month of Marg- shirsh / Krishna Paksh. She manifested to kill Moor Dhahitiya, in Sath Yuga. It is, since then Ekadashi Vrat is performed, and it plays important role in every Jiv-athma.
How many Ekadashis are there in a year?
Normally there are 24 Ekadashis Vrats in a year. Achariya-charan Shri Vallabh instructed that vaishnavs must observe 4 Jayantis (Krishna Jayanti, Narsingh Jayanti, Vaaman Jayanti and Ram Naami) as additional Ekadashi Vrats, thus making total of 28 Ekadashis Vrats for a normal year. In Adhik Maas, (additional month) we have 2 more Ekadashis making a total of 30 Ekadashis for that year.
