Damodardas Sambhalavare

Ever since Damodardas Sambhalavare was a child he was very concerned as to how he would be able to achieve the Bhagwan. Once during the Prayaga Makar bath Damodardas Sambhalavare met Krishnadas Meghan who informed him that he was going to the South of India in order to become the disciple of Shri Mahaprabhuji for through His grace one could realize the Bhagwan. From that day Damodardas Sambhalavare suffered the pangs of separation from Shri Mahaprabhuji and was continually pondering how he would be able to have His blessed sight.

Once during another winter bath at Prayag, Damodardas Sambhalavare found one small copper plate in the confluence of the Shri Yamuna and Ganga rivers. That night in a dream he was informed that he should accept as his guru the person would be able to read his copper plate. The next day he showed his copper box to many learned Brahmans and other holy men but none were able to read it.

Later, Damodardas Sambhalavare, while on business, went to the house of Seth Puroshottamdas and told him all about the copperplate, Seth Puroshottamdas replied, “None besides Shri Mahaprabhuji will be able to read it.” Damodardas then replied, “Krishnadas Meghan has also told me that through Shri Mahaprabhuji’s grace one is able to find Purnaprushotam.” During Damodardas fifteen day stay there Seth Puroshottamdas told him all about Shri Mahaprabhuji for he was also suffering the pangs of His separation.

Some days later, Shri Mahaprabhuji, carrying out Shrinathji’s order to initiate people, came to stay on the out skirts of the town in a garden. There, Shri Mahaprabhuji told Krishnadas Meghan to bring supplies from the town and further advised him not to tell anyone of His arrival, for those who had true love would come by own wish.

Krishnadas Meghan, after purchasing the supplies, met Damodardas who was coming on the main road from the king’s palace Damodardas got off his horse and after bowing to Krishnadas Meghan enquired whether Shri Mahaprabhuji had arrived. Krishnadas Meghan, remembering Shri Mahaprabhuji’s order, did not reply and continued on his way. Damodardas, reasoning that Krishnadas Meghan would not come to Kannouja without Shri Mahaprabhuji, sent his horse home and followed Krishnadas Meghan. When they reached the camp, Shri Mahaprabhuji questioned,

“Why did you tell him?” Krishnadas Meghan then exclaimed that he did not. Damodardas then humbly said, “He did not tell me, I have come on my own accord.”

Shri Mahaprabhuji then said, “Give me the copper plate you have found. “Damodardas who knew Shri Mahaprabhuji to be Shri Krishna prayed, “Of what use is it to you?” Shri Mahaprabhuji replied, “Give it to me, for you should surrender to the person who is able to read it.”
